« Sewage leak in Colinton | Main | Redbraes Clean-up this Friday »

Community Action on Water of Leith continues....

Yet more dedicated community minded souls have been giving up their freetime to help clean-up the river. Last weekend Stockbridge Community Council and Inverleith Cub Scout pack set about sorting out Stockbridge, whilst the rubbish was not as bad as previous years, there was enough work to keep all the families and cubs busy for 2 hours - then they retired to Hamiltons who laid on a buffet as a reward. The highlight (!?!) of the day was when the cubs saw a heron swallow a duckling whole. Thank you to all 40+ volunteers who took part.

Volunteers from Standard Life also cleaned up the river in Canonmills. 18 Volunteer organised their own event and the dive team turned up in wet suits to tackle those hard to reach places.

The Eco Club from Craigmount High School also joined us on Friday to plant over 40 native trees and shrubs along the river side, so nice to be adding something rather than just taking out rubbish, but inevitably we did a wee clean-up as well and found 2 virtually new bikes!!

And finally our volunteer returned to Redbraes weir for a short but productive clean-up. 7 trolleys, 3 TVs, a till, 3 bikes, 5 cones and around 9 bags of rubbish. So that is the river cleaned from Colinton to Leith. Just 3 more clean-ups to go in the Spring Clean, but rest assured the effort continues all year round.
