Rust identification workshop for beginners

This workshop will provide you with the material & knowledge to identify rust fungi that do not require a microscope.

Introduction

Rust fungi are an often overlooked group.  For some people, they are unsure of how to identify them or they are perceived as difficult.  As a result, these are lost records, leading to a partial species list for a surveyed site.

A good number of rusts are easy to identify without a microscope with the appropriate literature. It is these rusts we will focus on and you’ll be given a rust guide that will support you.

 How will the workshop run?

Three main parts:

  1. 1.       Start off indoors on various practical exercises on how to identify rust fungi.
  2. 2.       Followed by a foray to find and collect rusts.
  3. 3.       Back to the workshop to identify the collected rusts.
