Coalie Park is a hidden gem in the heart of Leith—a place where nature, history, and community come together along the banks of the Water of Leith. Once an industrial hub for coal, rail, and ship repair, it has evolved into an essential green space for the local community. However, this vital space is under pressure. It suffers from litter, graffiti, and anti-social behaviour, and as Scotland’s most densely populated area, Leith lacks high-quality outdoor spaces for its residents and wildlife.
Following the successful completion of Phase 1, we are now seeking support to bring Phase 2 to its conclusion—a project that will transform a redundant brick structure into The Dock a vibrant, creative, and inclusive community space. This phase will introduce a skate spot, meeting area, and community garden, all designed with and for the people of Leith.
What Will THE DOCK Deliver?
- A Unique Skate & Social Space – Repurposing an existing brick structure, we will integrate purpose-built skate features and seating. Designed in partnership with Edinburgh Wheels, this initiative not only creates a dynamic space for young people but also provides employment and training for local 18-25 year olds, helping them gain valuable construction skills. https://edinburghwheels.co.uk/2025/02/04/coalie-park-skating-community-and-green-space-revived/
- Community-Designed Art & Seating – Inspired by Antoni Gaudí, artist Campbell Barclay and members of our community will create beautiful mosaic benches using tiles and ‘found’ materials. This will be a space that reflects Leith’s industrial heritage, creativity, and independent spirit.
- A Thriving Community Garden – Built and maintained by local volunteers and project partners, this green oasis will feature sustainable planting that enhances biodiversity and climate resilience. Raised planters will reduce water needs while improving drainage and beautifying the space.
Why This Matters
This project is more than just a park improvement—it’s about fostering community pride, creating a safe and welcoming space, and providing opportunities for young people to engage in meaningful work. It will transform a neglected area into a destination for creativity, connection, and collaboration, encouraging both residents and visitors to enjoy and care for this important space.
How You Can Help
While we have secured funding from The National Lottery, Garfield Weston Foundation, Scape Scotland, Longstone Fund (administered by Foundation Scotland), The Leith Community Fund, local businesses, and community members, we still need support to make every aspect of this project a reality.
Your contribution—whether financial, in-kind, or through volunteering—will help bring this vision to life. Together, we can create a space that is beautiful, inclusive, and truly reflective of the vibrant Leith community.
