Our marvelous Meadows along the Water of Leith are full of life. This week volunteers removed invasive Himalayan Balsam & reduced brash encroaching on Orchids in our wetland meadow near Colinton. The survey team also recorded 50 plants in the Juniper Green meadow. Really nice to record some interesting new species. Here are just a few observations from our volunteers working to protect two of these meadows this week.
Common Carder Bee
Cut leaved Cranesbill (new to our meadow species list)
Seeding Common Orchid
Fruiting Lords and ladies
Araneus diadematus (Garden cross spider)
Yellow Rattle (aka vampire plant as it’s semi parasitic)
Common vetch (another first for our meadow plant list)
