An otterly healthy diet

Regular readers will be aware that we currently have two families of otters on the river. Two sets of mothers each with two cubs, quite a rare and unusual situation. This has lead to lots of sightings, video and photo being sent in to us and shared on social media. Including images of the otters eating and hunting. The featured image caught by Kat outside the Visitor Centre show one of the mothers with a very large eel for dinner.

This cub is just caught at the ‘tail end’ of their dinner, looks like a sizable trout and below is the mother swimming with another sizable catch. Both images by Tom Kelly

Back in 2021 we supported a study into the diet of otters on the Water of Leith. Please see the research paper below which was published in the International Otter Survival Fund Journal in 2021 written by Barbara Macfarlane, field work conducted by our volunteers – yes this did mean collecting otter spraints.
